Scouting for Food November 2007

SFF is a massive food collection campaign run by the NCAC. In 2005 Chain Bridge District packs, troops, teams, and crews collected 62,000 pounds of food that went to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) and other food banks. SFF is a two-part event.

On the first Saturday (November 3) Scouts deliver bags to every house in their assigned area, and on the second Saturday (November 10) the Scouts return to that area and collect donated food placed in those same bags by contributing neighbors. Some units also will collect food at area Safeways on November 10.

Pine Wood Derby    March 1, 2008

It is the most popular event for many Scouts and is probably the best known Scouting event among non-Scouts.

Other groups and organizations, such as Awana, and civic clubs often host their own pinewood derby but since the name pinewood derby is a registered trademark[1] of Boy Scouts of America, they generally create their own names.

The pinewood derby, for half a century "a celebrated rite of spring," has been named part of "America's 100 Best" by Reader's Digest magazine

The Scout is given a block of wood made of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails.

The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight (usually five ounces), must not exceed a certain length and must fit on the track used by that particular scout pack. Other than the previous basic design rules, the Cub Scout is able to carve and decorate the car as he chooses. Many Cub Scouts also add weights to the final design to bring the car to the maximum allowable weight.

Cars typically vary from unfinished blocks to whimsical objects, to accurate replicas of actual cars. The fastest cars tend to resemble low doorstops, with weight at the rear. Graphite is usually the only lubricant allowed, as it often helps to polish the provided nails. The track usually has two to six lanes and slopes down to the ground as the cars are powered by gravity. Tracks may be owned by the pack or rented.

The race is run in heats, giving every car the chance to run on each lane. The racers can be grouped with others from the same rank (Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, Bear Cubs, etc.), or can compete against the pack as a whole.

Cub Scout Day Camps: Wild, Wacky, Wonderful Wheels 2008

The theme for the 2008 National Capital Area Council Cub Scout Day Camps is "Wild, Wacky, Wonderful Wheels" .

This day camp theme  includes just about everything that rotates.... wheels on a car, train wheels, Ferris wheels, hamster wheels, roller skate wheels, the earth, skateboard & bicycle wheels, spinning tops, pizza wheels, clockworks, color wheels... you get the idea!

Boys in grade 1 (as of September 2008) through Webelos are eligible to attend day camp.

Webelos Resident Camp Goshen SR/Camp PMI

Goshen is the National Capital Area Council's long-term resident summer camp located on 4,000+ acres in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. There are six separate camps on the shores of 450-acre Lake Merriweather. The Boy Scouts use three of the camps for troop camping, the Webelos Scouts use two of the camps for their activities, and the High Adventure crews, hiking in the back country, depart from the sixth camp.
